There's a vulnerability in putting an artist's work out into the unkind world. What if no one likes it? What if the hours and hours you spent seem wasted and no one appreciates the meaning behind the art. Because there is meaning behind every piece of art, unless you're just a creating machine, only doing art for the money. I mean don't get me wrong, artists like money. They like putting food on the table and the occasional frou-frou coffee (or new paint!😉)
But the many artists I've met talk about how art fulfills them, lights their soul on fire, makes the troubles of life melt away during that tiny fraction they are creating. They find value in what they create. I'm no different.
This has been a year of discovery. Time to figure out my art, my style, what drives me. And sure, the comparisons to other artists can intrude on my safe space of joyful creating. But for the most part I'm creating for me, and if a piece resonates with someone, maybe they'll take it home to enjoy too! Always the icing on the cake.
And this leads to this piece. It was the first one I created for 2023, kind of a mantra for my future. To BE BRAVE. To try new things, to discover what brings me joy, to follow my own path. Being brave is hard when you're comfortable where you're at. But life can be unfulfilling sometimes and you have to step out of that comfort zone and be brave. That's what I'm doing. Are you needing a reason to be brave this year? I hope this piece resonates with you in your quest to do the brave things in life.
